Hello, hello! Can you believe 2017 is nearly over? It was a rough year for most with its ups and downs, but it’s hard to believe how quickly it went by! Unlike the majority of my peers, 2016 was actually a really great year for me. I moved to Indiana, started a new job, LOVED my new job, met Brian and traveled more than I ever have in previous years. So, in comparison, 2017 was a little lackluster. I knew 2016 would be hard to beat — it was my best year yet in many ways. Not every year can be your banner year, but that doesn’t mean that year is any less special or important.
Two years ago I compared my life to the sixth Harry Potter book — there was really no plot yet, but important events occurred that would allow me to start my story. 2016 was my 7th Harry Potter book, where my story really began (got the job, made the move, met the guy). I have to remind myself that not every scene or phase of life can be the Battle of Hogwarts — and it shouldn’t be. That would be exhausting. Okay, let me get to the point, since not all of you are huge HP dorks like I am. Ultimately, 2017 wasn’t the most exciting for me, but I know it set the stage for exciting things in the coming years.
Alright, let’s get into the good stuff — the highlight reel. If you’ve been following along for awhile, you may remember my insanely long list of goals for 2017. Well, I’m not going to go goal by goal (ain’t nobody got time for that), but I thought I’d share my highlights. These highlights help inform my 2018 goals, which I’ll be sharing tomorrow.
Goals I Met
Health. Okay, I had 7 health goals in total, which is a TON. Did I make every goal every single day or week? Probably not. But I have never eaten so healthy in my life. Brian and I are both incredibly mindful of what we eat now and feel so much better because of it. I even did 2 weeks without any added sugars over the summer and am doing a second round right now.
Meal Planning. If I totally killed it on one goal, this was it. Every single Sunday morning, I started the day by planning out meals for the entire week. Mostly dinners, but dinners that would provide enough leftovers so I could pack my lunches for work. This was definitely a big cooking year for me and we learned a ton of great new recipes!
Fitness. I’m going to say I met this goal, because I’ve never been in this great of shape. I’ve been very good with consistency of workouts and have maintained a balance of cardio, full body and yoga. When I look at the specific goals within, I was probably half and half. For example, I wanted to be able to run a 5K distance without stopping — I ran the first 4 months of the year and then suffered an ankle injury. I had to be off of it for a few months, then wore a brace, then STILL couldn’t run on it for several weeks. Ultimately I decided not to push it and I’ve found other ways to get my cardio.
Goals I Didn’t Meet
Read 10 books. Yikes, guys — I really screwed this one up. I read one book — I know, how pathetic? I finished Harry Potter and The Cursed Child (which is technically a play, but who’s counting?), started re-reading the first Harry Potter book and just, well, never finished. In all fairness, shortly after starting HP1, I went to an amazing blogger workshop at Jess Keys’ house in Chicago which completely changed my mindset around blogging. I decided to go all in and actually make it something great. Needless to say, that took up a lot of my time — but here we are! I wouldn’t do it any differently.
